Local Holt official agrees to appear on `Daily Show’
Susan Cox is no expert on Madonna or Brangelina, but she is well-versed on the topic of international adoptions.
An adoptee herself, she is vice president of public policy and external affairs at Eugene-based Holt International, which for the past 50 years has arranged more international adoptions than any agency in the United States.
Last month, she shared her insights on the recent spate of celebrity adoptions with a correspondent from "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," Comedy Central’s popular satirical news program. The episode featuring Cox’s interview is expected to air Tuesday.
The show – which airs weeknights at 11 p.m. and is repeated the following day at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. – takes a humorous look at the day’s news. Its correspondents sometimes take their subjects by surprise, asking outrageous questions and setting them up for laughs. But Cox knew what she was getting into when she flew to New York City for a three-hour taping Feb. 14.
"I have tried to prepare myself for the fact that I will look silly at best," Cox said with a laugh.

Hmmm… not sure what to make of this. No cable in this household- so someone please let us know how it turns out.
Ed- do you mean you wish an adoptee would speak rather than Ms. Cox? She is a Korean adoptee… but perhaps I misunderstood your comment.
Well, I just meant someone outside of the adoption agency world. It did not register that she is an adoptee. Only that she represents Holt.
If I think back over our experiences with Holt and consider what I have learned since, I would say they did not present a balanced or realistic view.
I of course am responsible for learning all of that myself, but I am still becoming less sure that they are doing the right thing as time goes by.
That’s what I meant by the latter part of my post. My views are changing.

I see what you are saying, Ed, and I agree that it would be nice to see a different perspective. (And my views have done a big shift too!)
I haven’t seen the show in quite a while, but I’m trying hard to remember if any of those interviews ever turned out much of anything positive. All I can remember is that most of the interviewees end up looking silly (at best) and the topic gets made fun of.
I have had the great fortune to hear Ms. Cox speak. She is a passionate advocate for adoptees. She also set us new adoptive parents straight about white privilege and the racism our children will face. I’ll forever be indebted to her for the perspective she gave us.
