How to apologize for racism (plus a specific call to adoptive parents of Asian children)

First of all, I was appalled to see this about some adoptive parent reaction to the Miley Cyrus photo, and here is another piece of advice to transracial adoptive parents.

Loved these and had to share. Seems there's been too much of this lately.

The non-apology "apology"

Free apologies!

I heart resist racism.

  1. Thanks for pointing these out – resist racism is brilliant, as always. I was stunned when reading about this in a popular AP forum. The majority of the comments were exactly like what RR was saying – “oh she’s just a kid, kids do dumb things” “I’m sure she didn’t mean anything by it” “We’ve all made that face before” etc etc. Very depressing.

  2. I heart resist racism, too! Thank goodness we have anti-racist activists to share model language for apologies. Now is the time to spread the word that intent doesn’t matter. It’s the harmful effect of the word-actions that require the need for apologies, repentence and tangible amends!

  3. An apology for racism is hollow anyway. It is only saying “I am sorry for saying what I really think.” Still the pretense is sickening.
